Not a bug report, I was just curious over practical applications of the Ward spell. Despite the fact my previous wins were with a Light/Cosmic combo, I never used the mid-level Light spells. Recently I've gotten some decent results w/ Pacify/Berserk, but I've had nothing similar from Ward/Barrier.
As just a hallway-blocker, Dig/Boulder works much better than Ward. It's only 1MP vs 6, it doesn't fade away, and I can usually levitate over the hole later or soak the 2HP to cross. Plus Dig can kill gargoyles and golems!
Are there uses for Ward that I just don't see?
Not really, I'm afraid. Ward has always been kind of an under-performer.
Some solutions I've been kicking around:
-Move Ward down to rank 2; now that Light has Vivify, it would still have a rank 3 spell.
-Allow the ward/barrier to be placed at any point, much like Black Hole.
-Make the spell produce a short wall of wards/barriers, much like the new Fire Wall.
-Make the spell's overcharge effect (ring of wards/barriers) the normal effect, and give it a new overcharge.
Anyone have any thoughts on these?
Even as a 1 mana spell i would rarely use ward as it is.
Choosing where to place it would be a good idea.
I haven't played elemental seriously yet so I'm not sure what formation firewall is in.
It would be a tradeoff, melee protection but being a sitting target for ranged attackers.
My ideas for ward would be either allow the player to pass through their own ward. Or having ward immobilize a creature it was cast directly upon.
Or possibly a combination of both, creatures could attempt to pass over a ward but it would immobilize them inside it. One problem with that however is it would be quite a variance from barrier.
I went for the combo plate, for the time being, at least; dropped Ward to rank 2, made it able to target any cell in sight, and nudged up the duration to boot.
