While playing MageGuild I was surprised to receive a string of messages something like this:

"The Delver begins digging.
The stairway crumbles to dust!
A hole appears."

It appears that the Delver has indeed destroyed the stairway and there is now no stairs down anywhere on the level, and so no way to progress further through the game.
