Potions of Permanence are your best friend.
My 'kit' almost always ends up being all the Absorbed bonuses I can get and a Wand of Effect Lengthening (wand + crystal ball of permanence). But the most useful item, the one I always go for right away, is the reversal amulet. Doubling your spell library instantly is too important to pass up. Amulets of Undeath are exceedingly handy as well.
